Mask Fogging Solutions: Why It Happens and the 5 Best Ways to Fix It

There is nothing quite as frustrating as a foggy mask. It’s distracting, it’s annoying, and—most importantly—it’s a safety issue. If you can’t see your buddy, your computer, or your surroundings clearly, you can’t be a safe diver.

At 72 Aquatics, we want you to focus on the fish, not on clearing your mask every thirty seconds. To fix the fog, we first have to understand why it’s happening in the first place.

Why Does My Mask Fog?

The “fog” is actually simple physics. It occurs when warm, moist air (from your face or your nose) hits the cooler surface of the mask lens. This causes the moisture to condense into tiny droplets.

However, there is a second culprit for new masks: a thin layer of silicone film left over from the manufacturing process. If you don’t remove this film, no amount of defogger in the world will keep your mask clear.

The 5 Best Ways to Fix the Fog

The “Toothpaste” Pre-Treatment (For New Masks Only)

If you just bought a brand-new mask at our shop, this is your first step. Manufacturers use silicone to protect the glass during shipping.

  • The Fix: Use a non-gel, white toothpaste (avoid the minty beads or whitening crystals, as they can scratch). Rub it onto the inside of the lens with your finger, let it sit for a few minutes, and rinse it off. Repeat this 2–3 times. This “scrubs” away that stubborn factory film.

Professional Defogging Gels and Sprays

Once the factory film is gone, you need a surfactant to prevent condensation.

  • The Fix: Professional defoggers (like Sea Gold or Spit) are designed specifically for dive masks. They create a microscopic film that prevents water droplets from sticking to the glass. Apply a drop to a dry mask, rub it around, and give it a quick rinse in the water just before you put it on.

  • Pro Tip: We keep the best-performing defoggers in stock at the shop—stop by and we’ll show you our favorites.

The “Baby Shampoo” Hack

If you have sensitive eyes or want a budget-friendly option, many divers swear by a 50/50 mix of water and baby shampoo.

  • The Fix: It’s gentle, smells great, and is biodegradable. It works on the same principle as professional defogger by breaking the surface tension of the water.

Don’t Breathe Through Your Nose!

This is the most common reason masks fog during a dive, even if you’ve treated them perfectly.

  • The Fix: When you exhale through your nose, you are pumping warm, humid air directly into your mask. Focus on inhaling and exhaling entirely through your regulator. If you feel the need to “equalize” the pressure in your mask, do it with a tiny, controlled puff, then go back to mouth-breathing.

Keep Your Face Cool and Clean

The temperature difference between your face and the water is the engine that drives fogging.

  • The Fix: Before you put your mask on, splash some cool water on your face. This lowers your skin temperature slightly. Also, avoid putting sunscreen or heavy moisturizers around your eyes right before a dive; these oils can break down your defogger and cause a blurry mess.

The “Last Resort” Skill: The Mask Clear

Sometimes, despite your best efforts, a little fog creeps in. This is where your SSI Open Water training comes in handy. Simply let a small amount of water into your mask, look down to let the water run across the lens (washing away the fog), and then perform a standard mask clear.

See the Ocean Clearly

A clear mask is the difference between a stressful dive and a magical one. If you’ve tried everything and your mask is still fogging, bring it into 72 Aquatics. It might be time for a deep cleaning, or perhaps the fit isn’t right for your face shape, allowing too much “nose air” to enter.
