We’ve all had that “uh-oh” moment: you turn around to head back to the boat or the shore, and suddenly, every rock, plant, and silhouette looks exactly the same. In your Open Water course, you learned how to take care of yourself. But what happens when the diver next to you has a problem? As scuba divers, we are addicted to the feeling of weightlessness and the thrill of exploring the underwater world. We love the familiar sound of our own bubbles and the life support system that allows us to stay down for an hour at a time. But what if there was another way to experience that world? A simpler, quieter, and perhaps even more intimate way? Welcome to the incredible discipline of freediving, a sport that is not a replacement for scuba, but a powerful complement that can make you a better, calmer, and more connected diver.
You’ve earned your Open Water certification and have your passport to the underwater world. So, what’s next on your journey? The SSI Advanced Open Water Diver rating is a mark of true achievement, and this post will show you the clear, rewarding path to earning it.
